A Pocket Journal for the Watch Obsessed!!! G Shock GW-5000U-1 " Screw Back Origin ". The modern DW and GW series are outgrowths of the original G-SHOCK model from 1983, the DW-5000.

Based upon the "Triple 10" concept, the DW is designed to withstand a 10-meter fall, maintain 10 bars (100m) of water resistance, and to operate for 10 years before requiring a battery replacement. Today, many modern DW-series watches even exceed some of these specifications. Its shock-resistant, hollow-structured case has since become an icon in the watch world, and represents the prototypical modern "tool watch, " while certain GW models add steel cores to the equation, upping shock-resistance while maintaining affordability. The GW-5000U-1CR may look like a standard DW-5600, but it holds a special secret. Previously available only in Japan, the idea to bring this fan-favorite watch to the U.

Began, believe it or not, with Hodinkee. Despite its resemblance to the DW-5600 models, this watch has a big difference: A steel screw-back that hides a steel core instead of the typical resin version. This small upgrade makes for a serious increase in hardiness without a steep increase in price - an improvement that we know the dedicated watch collector will appreciate. Paired to a matching, supple rubber strap, it does take on a vaguely tactical aspect, though its versatile feature set and comfortable design make it perfect for everyday wear. Equipped with four recessed push-buttons and a positive LED screen, it features the typical G-SHOCK complement of timers, alarms, world clock, stopwatches, full-auto backlight, and adjustable date format.

Water resistant to 200m, highly shock resistant, and equipped with Tough Solar charging, the GW-5000U-1CR is one tough timepiece. A welcome addition is the inclusion of Multi-Band 6 radio-controlled timekeeping, ensuring that the watch will forever stay accurate down to the millisecond. Whether you're strolling the streets of SoHo, swimming in the ocean, or rappelling from a helicopter, it promises consistent reliability and hyper-accurate timekeeping. Finished with a mineral crystal and its special, screw-down caseback, the GW-5000U-1CR is simply too cool of a timepiece to remain a Japan-only exclusive - which is why Hodinkee was so delighted to finally offer it Stateside. Radio-controlled, multi band 6 (automatically receives time correction signal up to six times a day), 5 world time (31 time zones), 1/100-second stopwatch, countdown timer, 5 daily alarms (with one snooze alarm), LED backlight, full auto-calendar (to year 2099), mute feature, energy saving (display goes blank to save power when the watch is left in the dark), battery level indicator, 12/24-hour format.
